The Most Important Organic Foods to keep You and Your Family Healthy

Not everyone can afford to buy everything organic and sometimes they are just not available. For your health, the following is a list of foods that you should always ensure are organic:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Baby food*
  • Bell Peppers
  • Green Beans
  • Milk
  • Peaches
  • Potatoes
  • Rice
  • Strawberries
  • *Many parents choose to make their own baby food for their infants. If you have the time and inclination, be sure to use organic foods because pesticides affect babies’ more than adult bodies. However if you have the time and inclination to do this, always avoid using beets, carrots, green beans, squash, turnips, spinach and collard greens; even if they are organic.

The reason is that you cannot be certain of the soil type that the veggies are grown in, and these in particular may contain high concentrations of nitrates which young infants can not process. High concentrations can affect their ability to transport oxygen throughout their bodies which can be dangerous. The safest bet when it comes to these vegetables is to buy commercial organic baby foods. These companies buy produce from growers who first test the nitrate levels in the soil to be sure it is safe for babies.

You should always shop from small local grocers, farmers or health food stores when possible. When you are in larger supermarkets look for foods that are certified organic and don’t be fooled by products that claim they are “all natural” or have other eco-friendly names, titles, mottos, etc., unless they also have the certified organic seal.

Many countries now have regulations on what make be called organic thus protecting the consumer from false claims. This practice is great for shoppers but makes it hard for local farms making the effort to promote their organic products.
